Introducing Carmen Leigh Keates...

    TRIM YOUR NAILS

Leah wasn’t like the other girls.
I usually land the sort of ladies
    who write to prisoners.
I could get a bag of them for a dollar.
    But Leah —

Go trim your nails, she’d say.
    They’re too long.
    What’s too long?
    Longer than mine.

She didn’t like any talk of the band tour.
She just went to the sink and broke up a lettuce.

    Still, in my mind,
and in the pyramid of sluts,
she stood there on the apex
    holding a biro
and asking if I needed anything from the shops.

From the verse novella Second-Hand Attack Dog, by Carmen Leigh Keates

Carmen is one of the artists on the bill at this year's Queensland Poetry Festival. She has recently completed an Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Creative Writing and is currently a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate in Creative Writing at the University of Queensland. Carmen was a guest reader at SpeedPoets in May this year, and you can read her 2010 Josephine Ulrick Prize commended poem, "One Broken Knife" here. Stay tuned, as later in the week I will feature an interview with her.

Catch Carmen at the Queensland Poetry Festival in Torching the Shadows - Saturday 27 August / Shopfront Space / 11.45am

Queensland Poetry Festival: Spoken in one strange word

I have been given the opportunity to be a guest blogger for the Queensland Poetry Festival (QPF) which is on in Brisbane next month. How exciting! I get to interview poets that are part of the festival and post some pictures of them, their poems and the interviews I do with them. So remember to drop by "Dada Doesn't Catch Flies" over the next few weeks leading up to QFP (26th-28th August) as I feature some extraordinary contemporary poets!

Penguin classics winner!

I won a Penguin Black Classics Subscriber only giveaway! I am a subscriber to Penguin Australia's email list and they had a competition where you had to say what your favorite Penguin Black classics is for your chance to win 10 Penguin Black Classics. My favorite was The Pillow Book by Sei Shonagon, I have read it so many times over the years and it is a book that I keep returning to and re-falling in love with.

I was so excited when I got the email to say I had won, but then I had the hard task of choosing ten Black Classics - there are so many great books to choose from! This was the eclectic list that I settled on and they arrived yesterday:

    1. Baudelaire Charles Selected Poems
    2. Keats John Complete Poems
    3. Kierkegaard Soren Fear & Trembling
    4. Seneca Dialogues & Letters
    5. Shackleton Ernest South:The Endurance Expedition
    6. Caesar Julius Conquest of Gaul
    7. Darwin Charles Voyage of the Beagle
    8. De Quincey Thomas Confessions of an English Opium-Eater
    9. Huysmans Joris-Karl The Damned
10.Goethe The Sorrows of Young Werther

Queensland Poetry Festival...

Hello! I have been busy writing, reading, note taking and transcribing since I got back from Melbourne. I interviewed three more poets for the PhD while I was away. So that brings the list to seven now: Laurie Duggan, Alan Wearne, Robert Adamson, John Tranter, Kris Hemensley, John A Scott and Robert Kenny. Still a few more to go!

Also with the wedding only seven weeks away I am now devoting my weekends to wedding related organising. So life has been busy but wonderful since my return. However, as we all need a break from time to time, today I booked my ticket for the Queensland Poetry Festival which is on at the Judith Wright Centre next month from the 26th to the 28th. You can check out the program and list of artists here. Looking forward to a long weekend of poetry and seeing some friends read. Might see you there!

Melbourne...

Bridge Street Richmond, China Town, National Gallery of Victoria and the State Library

I had a great time in Melbourne. Between the conference, the book launches and poetry readings, interviews with poets, visiting the Vienna Art and Design and King Tut exhibitions, and catching up with friends, it was a hectic week. Now, back to reality, more soon!
